It all started with a photo of a child painting without fear.
Who is Jaquito
I am Jacobo Bedoya, but since I was a kid people have called me Jaquito. I live and paint in Medellín. I am 25 years old and have spent the last while exploring abstract painting: color and form as a language for saying what words cannot.
The name comes from a photograph. In it I appear at ten years old, painting an abstract picture with that focus only kids who are not yet afraid of anything have. Jaquito was what my mom called me. Over time I set the brush aside, the way adult life tends to make you, but that photo kept waiting.
Coming back to painting meant going back to exactly that point: to being ten years old, to abstraction, to the drive to create without asking permission. Every piece is an attempt to reconnect with that kid and, in the process, build a visual language that speaks to whoever looks at it too.
Abstract atmospheres
I paint to answer a single question: who I would be if I had never stopped creating. Every atmosphere is an attempt to return to being ten years old, when I painted without thinking twice or asking permission, and to speak with that version of myself.
I don’t paint a subject, I paint the mood around it: the feeling of being there, with no need for a recognizable figure. I start with large brushes and fast gestures; I finish with small brushes that sharpen focus and contrast. Both versions of me live together on the canvas.
